The Office of the Tax Ombud (OTO) today officially launches its 2026 Taxpayer Awareness Campaign, “Smart Taxpayers Make a Difference,” in support of the 2026 Tax Filing Season, which commences on 1 July 2026.
The campaign aims to educate taxpayers, promote informed participation, and encourage voluntary tax compliance, emphasising that every taxpayer can make a meaningful difference by taking informed, responsible, and timely action.
The 2026 campaign shifts the focus from awareness to impact, highlighting how informed, responsible and timely actions by taxpayers contribute to a system that is fair, transparent, accountable and responsive.
Empowering Taxpayers to Act
The campaign encourages taxpayers to take practical steps that make a real difference:
• Know your rights and responsibilities
• Act early to resolve tax matters
• Follow the correct processes and channels
• Submit accurate returns and respond promptly to SARS
• Seek assistance where necessary, including from the OTO when appropriate
By taking these actions, taxpayers not only improve the resolution of their own matters but also contribute to better service delivery and a stronger tax system for all.
As we continue with the 2026 Tax Filing Season, be a smart taxpayer make a difference. Don’t wait, act now. File on time, and together we can build a culture of voluntary tax compliance that benefits everyone. The OTO will roll out targeted education awareness campaigns throughout various provinces and ensure we reach out to taxpayers.
Smart taxpayers don’t just comply; they make a difference.
